Pondering: Sorrow's Refining Influence

I came across this in my chronological Bible reading recently:

Better to spend your time at funerals than at parties.
    After all, everyone dies—
so the living should take this to heart.
Sorrow is better than laughter,
for sadness has a refining influence on us.

A wise person thinks a lot about death,
while a fool thinks only about having a good time.

Ecclesiastes 7:2-4 NLT

It reminds me of Jesus' statement that jumped out at me 20 years ago when my 20 year old son was diagnosed with thyroid cancer:

These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peaceIn the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.
John 16:33 NASB

Thinking this week about the refining influence that the trials and suffering and loss can have upon us. Many of you have gone through dark valleys. Would you like to share? Comment below as a guest if you like.

It Is Well (traditional lyrics)

When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul

It is well
With my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul

It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)

It is well, it is well with my soul

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul
